Chinanews, Changchun, November 14 – Tigers are very rare in China nowadays, and usually they can only be seen in primeval forests. However, the traces of Siberian tigers have been discovered in rural Huichun, Jilin Province.
Siberian tiger is the largest of all the tiger subspecies, located in Russia, northern China and the Korean Peninsula. According to the statistics of 1993, there were 250 – 300 Siberian tigers left in China. A research in 1999 confirmed that the traces of Siberian tigers could hardly be found in the country at that time. Last Sunday, several residents of Sanjiazi Village found the footprints of a tiger 500 meters outside their village, and several days previously1, a resdient of another village nearby had lost a bull, which had been killed by a beast. After careful investigation2, the staff members of local wildlife resource reserve office believed that the bull had been attacked by a Siberian tiger of about 150 kg heavy, and very probably the same tiger that left the footprints. The footprints are 15 cm long and 14.3 cm wide, they were left by a mature male Siberian tiger. It is estimated that the tiger had left the village for the Korean Peninsula after killing3 the bull. However, the borderline was densely4 populated, which had made it turn back halfway5.
