Nov. 25 - Beijing's central business district is not only the city's business center, but also one of the city's worst traffic areas—a problem the district government hopes to alleviate1 with upcoming free shuttle buses.
Battery-powered buses are likely to be put into operation before the year's end, carrying commuters between subway stations and office buildings around the CBD, the Beijing News quoted CBD Management Committee. The committee says discussions of the project's details, such as stop locations and intervals2, are underway. The move aims to save office workers' time between the subway and office. Currently many people are wasting their time waiting at traffic lights, even although their office is within walking distance of the subway. Impatient pedestrians3 choose to jaywalk, which only worsens traffic conditions. Guomao subway station on Line 1 is the closest station to office buildings in the CBD. Because of this, nearby intersections4 are usually a mess of both cars and pedestrians. The environmentally-friendly buses will attempt to lighten traffic jams by reducing pedestrians crossing at intersections. The free buses will run during peak hours and lunch breaks. They will stop at major office buildings in the CBD such as Guomao (China World Trade Center), the Kerry Center, and China Central Place, which are home to a plethora5 of multinational6 companies. Also, the CBD Management Committee has announced that 10 new roads will be put into use within the year. They are expected to divert traffic away from busy areas.
