Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 26 – In recent years, many rural women, especially female migrant workers, have often suffered from serious domestic violence. The issue should raise the concern of society, said Jiang Yue'e, head of the Legal Rights Department under the All-China Women's Federation1.
Recently, a survey was carried out to investigate rural women's situation on legal rights enjoyment2 and their demand for legal protection. According to this survey, about 11.6% of the women in rural regions had the experience of fighting with their husbands over the past year. For female migrant workers, such proportion reached as high as 13.5%. About half of the women respondents claim that during the fights, their husbands committed violent acts against them. “Since most women migrant workers are regarded as the floating population in cities, they might face a lot of obstacles if they want to get legal support under this situation. For example, if they want to file for divorce, it will usually cost them a lot, both in time and money. Due to these difficulties, some women choose to reconcile themseleves to things as they are, which might promote even more severe domestic violence in future, ” Jiang said. Other surveys show that some women, in order to put an end to domestic violence, might stoop to criminal activities.
