Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 8 – According to People’s Daily, the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous1 Prefecture in Southwest China’s Yunnan Province is home to wild elephants. But the increasing number of wild elephants has brought many problems, such as that they often damage crops and cause injuries to people and draught2 animals.
The wild elephant has been listed as one of the most precious animals by international animal protection organization since 1972, and Xishuangbanna is one of their crucial habitats. Tang Zhongming, an official from local nature reserve bureau revealed that currently the area has attracted many wild elephants to come to live. He said that currently there are 250 Asian elephants in the area, while in the 1970s, this number was only 100. He said that Xishuangbanna prohibits people from hunting, which has helped the number of wild animals to increase steadily3. But Tang also revealed that wild elephants had caused the death of well over20 people. Li Zhiyong, an official from local forestry4 bureau, said that the local government had made a total compensation of 14.17 million yuan to 120 individual victims families for their losses. But he also suggested the compensation was not enough.
