Chinanews, Beijing, December 19 – Several favorite pet birds of Beijingers, including mynah and thrush, are now placed on the protected wildlife list. Thus from January 1, 2008, it will not be allowed to buy or sell such birds, or a heavy fine will be imposed on both the buyers and sellers.
The new protected wildlife list was released on December 17, 2007, covering 48 species under first-class protection, while there were only 32 on the previous list. It is also the first time to put reptiles1 and amphibians2 under first-class protection in Beijing. Most of the pet birds on the list are no native species of Beijing, but the huge pet market here has driven many hunters to catch and smuggle3 them for profit, as it is impossible to breed such birds in domestic environment.
