Chinanews, Beijing, December 21 – According to the Urban Development and Environment Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, urban traffic in China is faced with severe challenges. Traffic jams in some big Chinese cities have triggered off widespread complaints among the residents.
During the 10th Five-Year Plan Period (2001 - 2005), the number of buses and urban railway trains had increased to 310,000, and public transportation now plays a more important role in urban transportation. More and wider roads as well as better bridges and overpasses1 have been built, too. Actually, transportation hardware in China has witnessed a rapid development, but transportation management is still far from satisfactory, especially when China is undergoing an urgent urbanization process.
