Bill Gates said maintaining his Facebook profile had been 'way too much trouble' after being deluged by friend requests. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has stopped using Facebook after being deluged by friend requests. The billionaire philanthropist and Microsoft chairman said managing his profile had become "way too much trouble". "I had 10,000 people wanting to be my friends," he told the audience at a conference in India. Mr Gates said it took him a long time to go through his list of friend requests, trying to remember which people he did and didn't know. "It was just way too much trouble, so I gave it up," he said. Mr Gates, who was in New Delhi to receive an award for his work with his charitable organisation2, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, also admitted he was not a "24-hour-a-day tech person". "I read a lot and some of that reading is not on a computer," he revealed. "I'm not that big at text messaging." He also cautioned that despite the many benefits of the digital revolution, some technology could waste people's time if they weren't careful. Although Mr Gates has decided3 to delete his personal Facebook profile on the social-networking site, a Facebook fan group dedicated4 to Mr Gates has almost 17,000 followers5, while a support page for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has around twice as many "supporters", with 34,000 fans.
