While most Americans will be feasting on traditional roast dinners and sipping1 egg nog come Christmas, other countries around the world will be enjoying their own - very different - culinary customs.
大多数美国人在圣诞期间会吃烤肉、喝蛋酒,而其他国家也有自己独特的圣诞大餐。
As charted on an infographic compiled by Bookatable, Christmas dinner in France is usually enjoyed shortly after midnight on Christmas Eve, and comprises of
oysters2,
lobster3 meat and foie gras; whereas in Japan, a celebratory bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken has been all the rage since the 1970s.
Perhaps most unusual of all, head to Greenland and you'll find natives ringing Christmas in with kiviak: the raw flesh of Arctic birds which have been
fermented4 for months in the hollowed-out body of a seal -
beaks5, feathers, feet and all.
For those Greenland inhabitants who wish to
dodge6 the seal-encased dead bird, there's mattak:
chunks7 of whale blubber.
Kentucky Fried Chicken has been customary in Japan ever since the American fast-food giant launched a 'Kentucky for Christmas'
marketing8 campaign in 1974.
The fried chicken meal - which comes with cake and
champagne9 and costs around 3,336
yen10 ($40) - is so popular that many fans order it months in advance to avoid two-hour waiting lines on Christmas Day.
Seafood11 crops up on the menu in several countries, particularly those with warm December climates.
Australians typically enjoy barbeque-sizzled
shrimp12; while Fijians chow down on banana-leaf wrapped fish.
Southern Italians
opt13 for a traditional 'feast of the seven fishes' which includes calamari,
anchovies14 and creamy baked
eels15.
Over in the Philippines, Christmas dinner usually comprises of crunchy suckling pig and queso de bola, edam cheese coated in red wax.
In India, meals often include
aromatic18 Biryani with lamb, mutton or chicken; followed by cake or kheer, a
milky19 rice pudding.
In Ethiopia, a
spicy20 chicken
stew21 called doro wat is usually served with sourdough injera flat-bread; and a Ghanaian Christmas dinner also includes stew, served with toasted
maize22 porridge.
South Africans
grill23 turkey and butterflied legs of lamb on the 'braai' barbecue for an alfresco Christmas lunch.
Turkey is served in Peru and Brazil, as well as in the U.K, the land of Christmas Pudding.
It is traditional to coat this rich dessert with brandy and then set it alight, and to hide a coin inside.
Similarly, in Sweden, it is a Christmas tradition to serve rice pudding with a hidden almond submerged in it. The finder is rewarded with a prize, and - as legend has it - good luck for the next year.
