Celebrating her first day as an adult Sunday, 18-year-old Nobel Prize-winner Malala Yousafzai did the gift-giving -- a girls school for Syrian refugees in Lebanon. 12日,诺贝尔和平奖得主马拉拉·优素福·扎伊迎来了自己的18岁生日。为庆祝自己正式长大成人,马拉拉送出一份大礼:为黎巴嫩的叙利亚难民开办了一所女子学校。
"I demand of leaders we must invest in books instead of bullets," Yousafzai said in a speech "on behalf of the world's children."
When she was 15, Yousafzai was shot and seriously wounded by the Pakistani Taliban for advocating girls' education. After recovering, she continued her defiant1 advocacy, which led last year to her becoming the youngest Nobel laureate ever.
She told Reuters she chose to open the school in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley "because I believe that the voices of the Syrian refugees need to be heard, and they have been ignored for so long."
Lebanonis hosting more than a quarter of the estimated 4 million Syrians who have fled the country's civil war, including about 500,000 school-age children.
The school, near the Syrian border, can accommodate up to 200 girls ages 14 to 18. It was paid for by Yousafzai's non-profit Malala Fund.
The student body shared birthday cake and sang songs, bringing the Nobel laureate to tears.
