BEIJING, Nov. 23 - Chinese Foreign Ministry1 spokesman Liu Jianchao said here Thursday that the Dalai Lama's appointing successor will violate religious rituals and historical conventions of Tibetan Buddhism2.
Liu made the remarks when asked to comment on the Dalai Lama's recent remarks which indicated that he might announce his successor. He said the system of reincarnation of great lamas is unique to Tibetan Buddhism which has complete religious rituals and historical conventions. The Chinese government carries out the policy of religious freedom and respects the conventions of Tibetan Buddhism which has been made clear in a recent-released regulation on reincarnation of great lamas, Liu said. "Dalai's remarks obviously violated the religious rituals and historical conventions," he added.
