Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 28 – Recently, some foreign media published some articles that described the Chinese Three Gorges1 Dam project as something like "a monster" or "a bomb."
In response to this, a scientist said on Tuesday that he hoped foreign media could report about China objectively. Chinese people welcome foreign friends to give adequate remarks about Chinese projects, but not demonize China, he said. The statement was made by Pan Jiazheng, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and also an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering. In a press conference, Pan said as a normal citizen, he had always respected foreign media and foreign journalists because the reports they made were usually objective and fair. However, recently, he found that some foreign media and foreign journalists hold a strong prejudice against China. In their reports, they said nothing about the achievements and contributions that China had made. On the other hand, they played up, distorted, or even invented stories about problems in China. This would do nothing good to enhance the friendship between China and other countries. With regard to Chinese Three Gorges Dam project, Pan had displayed some of the reports made by foreign media. In most of these reports, the project was described as “a monster along the Yangtze River”, or “a bomb that contributes to global warming.” In some reports, it was said that the water in the Three Gorges Dam was “as dark as soybean source.” As an individual Chinese citizen, Pan said he had devoted2 the latter half of his life to the project. He felt very upset when he saw that some people described the project in this way. He hoped that foreign media could report on China in an objective way. Chinese people welcomed foreign friends to give their adequate remarks about China, even if the remarks might appear strict. However, they should not demonize China.
