Chinanews, Beijing, May 11 – The 2007 Report on Yangtze River's Protection and Development issued by Chinese Academy of Sciences reveals that the river's ecological¹ condition has deteriorated² continuously.

The report emphasizes “protection” rather than “development”, which indicates that experts hope to change people's old idea on river utilization³.

“Most experts believe the exploitation of water resources should be undertaken in a reasonable way, and people should also consider the ecological condition around the Yangtze River region when they deepen their efforts to economic development,” Wang Shucheng, ex-minister of water resources said.

He also revealed that the current ecological condition of the Yellow River and Haihe River is not to be optimistic about.
