Chinanews, Chengdu, Aug 28 – Giant pandas raised at the Sichuan breeding1 center have witnessed a “baby boom” this year. Since giant panda Jini delivered the first baby panda this year on Feb 24, the giant pandas raised in the Sichuan breeding center have so far delivered 21 baby pandas, the most in history.
On August 24, giant panda Long Xin, living in Wolong Giant Panda Protection Research Center for seven years now, gave birth to twin baby pandas. This was the fifth time that giant pandas gave birth to babies at the center this year. In addition, several other giant pandas raised by the center, including “Jinzhu” in Ya'an, “Baiyun”, a giant panda given by Sichuan to San Diego in the United States, and “Yang Yang”, a giant panda given by the research center to Austria, have all given birth to babies this year. They have altogether delivered 12 baby pandas this year. Meanwhile, the giant pandas raised by the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base have given birth to 9 baby pandas. So all in all, 21 baby pandas have been born this year. At present, several other giant pandas raised at the Wolong and Chengdu research centers are already pregnant2 and are about to give birth to babies. Experts predict that about 3-8 baby pandas will be born this year.
