Have one's heart in one's boots

When someone is said to have his/her heart in his/her boots he or she is afraid, melancholy1 or discouraged. Romeo, for instance, would certainly have his heart in his boots if Juliet did not return his admiration2.

"We gentle ladies don't wear boots, of course, but I would surely have my heart in my boots if Romeo did not love me," Juliet sighed.

  感到沮丧

当某人说have his/her heart in his/her boots时,他/她是在担心、忧郁或者灰心。举个例子,如果朱利叶对他的爱慕毫无反应,罗密欧肯定会have his heart in his boots。

  “当然,文雅的女士不穿靴子,但如果罗密欧不爱我,我肯定会很沮丧的。”朱利叶叹息。

  类似的俚语还有have (one's) heart in (one's) mouth,心提到嗓子眼了,表示极其害怕或者担心。
