Chinanews, Chengdu, September 20 – According to the record of the Ministry1 of Health, the proportion of defective2 babies had been increasing, from 104.9 every 10,000 in 2001 to 145.5 every 10,000 in 2006.

Every year, 200,000 – 300,000 babies with obvious defects are born in China. Taking those with recessive3 defects into consideration, the number can be as high as 800,000 – 1,200,000. That is to say, 4% - 6% of newborns in China are born with physical defects.

Only 20% -30% of such defective babies will survive after careful treatment, while 30% - 40% will eventually die, and the rest will live with deformities.

Currently, about 30 million Chinese families have defective babies, approximately 10% of the total.

Thus the National Population and Family Planning Commission of China has launched a meeting on prevention and treatment of Congenital defects in Chengdu.
