Auto¹ sales in China, the world's biggest car market, surged 6.3 percent year on year to 2.12 million units in April, data from an industry association showed on Wednesday.

Sales of passenger vehicles with nine seats or less rose by 6.5 percent year on year to 1.78 million units last month, according to the China Association of Automobile² Manufacturers. 

 

The country produced 2.17 million vehicles last month, up 4.3 percent year on year, the association said in an online statement.

 

In the first four months, auto output and sales rose 5.7 percent and 6.1 percent year on year to 8.76 million and 8.65 million units separately.

 

New-energy vehicle output and sales climbed 126.8 percent and 131.1 percent to 94,000 and 90,000 in the first four months.

 

Chinese auto sales growth peaked at 45 percent in 2009 and has fallen steadily³ as cities try to control smog and congestion⁴ with limits on new vehicles.
