Previously2, the UK had fallen to seventh position due to concerns about Brexit.
The position of China on the list comes as little surprise, given the number of high profile agreements and investments involving Chinese and international firms in recent months.
In 2016, close to $100 billion dollars was invested by Chinese firms in Europe, a figure that looks set to be exceeded in 2017.
The totals for 2016, which were estimated by specialist firm Deloitte and shared here by business newspaper City A.M., include nearly 170 acquisitions of European firms by Chinese ones.
