Chinanews, Beijing, June 11 – Chinese ocean economy has transcended1 its extensive development mode and is making rapid progress. However, development of ocean economy is still in a rudimentary stage. Ocean economy has a great potential market. Chinese economy may be in future prompted by ocean economy, said Gao Zhiguo, a Ph.D tutor at the China University of Oceanology.
At present, ocean economy accounts for a relatively2 small portion of the Chinese GDP output. In China, such portion falls below the world’s average level. Statistics show that at present, ocean economy accounts for 4% of the world’s GDP output and in China, related proportion is only 3.4%. Ocean economy has a great advantage over land economy in regard to its compatibility and sustainability. In the 200 kilometers of coastal3 area in China, over 40% of the country’s population lives there and over 50% of the cities in China are located there. The coastal area produces over 70% of the gross national product and attracts 84% of foreign direct investment. About 90% of the export trade products in China are made in this area. However, the land area in this coastal region accounts for less than 30% of the total territory in the region. The achievement made is closely related with and largely attributed to the development of ocean economy. In developing its economy, China needs to strike a balance between population growth and the effective use of its natural resources. At the same time, China also has to make sure that its environment is well protected. In addressing all these issues, it will probably be a good way for China to boost its ocean economy. The golden week holiday scheme has greatly boosted the tourism industry in coastal regions. In the long run, tourism industry may become an important part in the development of ocean economy. If sightseeing activities can replace more leisure activities, ocean economy will have great room for further development. In the short term, the booming of tourism industry near coastal regions, the new flights that have opened near coastal regions, and the discovery of new oilfields near deep-ocean areas have all proved that ocean economy has a bright prospect4 for future development, Gao said.
