Chinanews, Shanghai, Aug.2 – As consumer price index (CPI) keeps rising in China, the consumer confidence index in Shanghai reached 109.3 points during the second quarter, dropping by 3.4 points compared with the first quarter, said the National Statistics Bureau’s Shanghai Investigation1 Team, the Laodong Daily reported.
The survey, conducted by the National Statistics Bureau's Shanghai Investigation Team, shows that the five sub-indexes under CPI had all dropped to some degree. The largest drop occurred in the living standard index, while indexes of employment, overall economy and family income confidence dropped to a smaller degree.
Since the beginning of this year, prices of consumer goods, especially meat and food, have kept rising. This has affected2 consumers' optimism in the prospect3 of their future life. The investigation shows that 82.1% of the interviewees think that commodity prices were a bit too high in the second quarter, an increase of 20.2 points over the first quarter, among whom 21.1% think the price hikes were intolerable, an increase of 10.5 points. 63.9% of the interviewees predict the price hike will continue, an increase of 12.3 points, among whom 10.1% believe commodity price will rise by a large margin4, an increase of 7.4 points, the Shanghai Investigation Team said.
Although consumer confidence index fell during the second quarter, it still hovers5 at a high degree. Based on the past information, it can be seen that in recent years, the consumer confidence index in Shanghai has remained at a relatively6 high level and such index will climb steadily7 year on year. This indicates that on the whole, consumers hold an optimistic view of their current and future economic life.
