Chinanews, Beijing, Aug. 10 – Tomato growing center has developed rapidly in China recent years, its tomato export volume taking up 30% of the world’s total trade amount.
According to latest statistics, world’s tomato production volume has reached 29 million tons, and the top three producers are the U.S., European Union and China. In 2006, China exported 629.8 thousand tons of ketchup1, making China one of the main ketchup producers. Currently, the tomato growing acreage has reached 1 million mu for tomato planting, which are mainly located in Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Gansu. In Xinjiang, the arecage is 800 thousand mu. According to experts, Chinese ketchup is very competitive in the world market. Some 26 million tons of ketchup are in demand in the domestic market, and the consumption rate of ketchup will rise by 15% annually2.
