Chinanews, August 27 – Smith-Field Foods Inc., the biggest pork supplier in the US, announced that it would sell 60 million pounds of additive-free pork to a Chinese company. This will be the first time for US to export so much pork to China.
According to the contract, Smith-Field will export to China high-quality lean pork that is as good as that sold in the US. Smith-Field has not yet released the name of the Chinese company. All the pork will be shipped before the end of 2007. At present, the share price of Smith-Field has increased a lot at New York Stock Exchange. “We are glad to establish business ties with this Chinese company, and we are expecting more orders from China, which will mark a good beginning for stable and continuous cooperation,” said Larry, the president of Smith-Field. Now the company is negotiating1 with COFCO, the biggest food importer and exporter in China. As China is faced with severe pork shortage2 nowadays, the contract might play an important role in promoting the pork trade of the US in the next 1 or 2 years.
