Chinanews, Beijing, Sept 20 – On September 17, director-general of the State Administration of Quality Supervision1, Inspection2 and Quarantine Li Changjiang met with some British and American journalists and answered their questions about Chinese import and export goods and Chinese food safety. The foreign journalists team was organized by the Better Hong Kong Foundation.
At the press conference, Li said many foreign media had incorrectly reported about Chinese goods and this was because they did not know about Chinese companies and how the goods were made. To help them better understand Chinese companies, Chinese government welcome foreign journalists to pay visits to Chinese manufacturing companies and the related quality checking organs, and this can help foreign journalists to report about Chinese goods with a real and more objective view and thus help American and global consumers to better understand Chinese products, he said. During the press release, some foreign journalists asked Li how Chinese government could effectively supervise the quality of its products and how China could respond to some American consumers' doubt about the quality of Chinese products. Li replied that since 2004, the qualified3 rate of Chinese foods exported to US had reached 99%, which showed that on the whole, most of Chinese foods exported to the United States had met related standards of the US. Li admitted that there was still 1% of the foods that did not meet certain standards. With regard to this 1% of inferior foods, Chinese government will make all efforts to solve the problems involved, he declared. At the same time, he said, China will strengthen its supervision efforts on food manufacturing companies and punish those that make inferior goods. With all these efforts, the government hopes that we can finally reach the goal that all foods made in China are up to related standards, Li noted4. How to improve product quality and address the food safety problem might be viewed as a common task for all countries in the world. With regard to this, China is willing to cooperate with other countries, to deepen our mutual5 understanding and carry out more exchanges to address the issue together, Li concluded.
