Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 28 – Chinese general aviation industry would meet unprecedented1 development opportunities, according to predictions made by 300 experts attending the recent 2007 China General Aviation Industry Forum2.
General aviation activities refer to all kinds of civil aviation activities that are done by civil aircraft not for public transportation purpose. Private airplanes make up an important part of general aviation activities. The China General Aviation Experts Committee predicts that over the next 10-15 years, the number of planes owned by Chinese individuals will increase from 11 in 2006 to 2,000 in 2020. Would this be a good or a sad thing to the Chinese public? The International Herald3 Leader recently carried out a survey on this issue through sina.com. By November 21, about 2,000 people joined the survey. When people were asked whether China should encourage individuals to buy planes, 49.96% of the people picked up “Yes.” "As Chinese economy grows, some people will surely be able to buy their private planes. And when more people buy their planes, it will further boost China's economy. This is just like the development of automobiles5 in China. Ten years ago, I couldn't believe that so many people in China would one day be able to buy their own cars and Chinese auto4 industry would play such an important part in the national economy. If many people had held an opposing view to the development of private cars, Chinese economy wouldn’t have made so much progress as it is now. The same will be true of the case of private planes industry when it has made progress," said a madam named Ms. Li from Chengdu. The survey further asked “how will the public react to the phenomenon if more and more people have their private planes.” In answer to this question, 39.11% of the respondents said “this will make some people hate the rich even more.” “When people are encouraged to buy their own planes, this will make a new toy of the rich show off their wealth, as it is now for the villas6 and flashy cars. To the public, it will further widen the gap between the rich and the poor,” said Ms. Xia from Hubei. In the survey, 34.27% of the people think that more people will be inspired and then work harder with the idea of owning their private planes. Mr. Ma, a man from Beijing, said owning private planes “would reflect a rich person’s taste.”
