Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 11 – A recent survey shows that by 2016, the number of the middleclass in China will reach 100 million. By then, women will become the main force in leading the consumption trend.
The prediction was made by HSBC after it investigated a group of Chinese aged1 20-49 whose annual incomes fell between US$7,500 and US$25,000. It announced the survey result last week, the Beijing Youth Daily reported. The survey finds that among people categorized as the middle-class group, modern women have demonstrated much more interest in buying luxury goods, houses and overseas travel. They are also more active in making investment and expect high returns from their investment. The survey focuses on two kinds of people within this group: people who are categorized as modern women and people who live in DINK (double-income-and-no-kids) families. The survey shows that modern women like luxury goods best, as the survey shows that about 85% of women bought these goods before, followed by the middle-class group (76%) and the DINK families (75%). In the survey, 44% of the modern women say they buy luxury goods for their excellent qualities, while for the middle-class group and the DINK families, their related proportions in this aspect reach 40% and 38%, respectively. The survey also shows that modern women do not care about prices in buying goods – in the survey, modern women's sensibility to price is graded as 3.5 and the price sensibility rates for the middle-class group and the DINK families reach 3.8 and 3.9 respectively. About one-fourth of the respondents in each group claim that they buy luxury goods as a reward for themselves: in the survey, 22% of the modern women hold this view and for the middle-class group and the DINK families, the proportions who hold similar views reach 21% and 23%, respectively. The survey shows that about 11% of people in DINK families buy luxury goods mainly to show off their social status, while 10% of people in the middle class and 8% of modern women would think so. The survey shows that 86% of modern women have bought their houses, the highest proportion among all, followed by people in the middle-class group (77%) and people in DINK families (73%). Among those modern women who have not bought their houses, 18% attribute it to financial reasons (for the middle-class group, 30% say so and for DINK families, 26% hold this view). 15% of the modern women in the survey say they live with their parents, so there is no need for them to buy a house ( in the survey, 25% of the middle-class people and 20% of the DINK families pick up this reason.). In the survey, 53% of the modern women plan to buy a house in the next 2-3 years and 57% of the middle-class group and half of the DINK families have a similar plan.
