Chinanews, Shanghai, Dec. 11 – The booming global ocean transportation industry has greatly promoted the development of the shipbuilding industry in China. In 2006, China's shipbuilding hit a historical mark of 14 million deadweight tons and this year, it is expected that China's shipbuilding will further touch a new high point to reach 16 million DWTs, an expert from China Shipping1 Industry Association said over the weekend.
China has become one of the biggest shipbuilders in the world. Related information shows that in 2006, China's shipbuilding industry turned out over 10 billion yuan of profits and its output accounted for 20% of the world's total. By 2010, China's annual shipbuilding capacity is expected to reach 23 million DWTs. This will make China take up 25% of market shares in world shipbuilding. By 2015, China's annual shipbuilding capacity might reach 28 million DWTs. There are over 3,000 shipbuilding enterprises in China, 500 of them being large or middle-sized companies.
