Twitter has made some changes to its 140-character limit for tweets.

The social networking company said names in replies, and media attachments¹ such as photos, videos and polls will no longer be counted towards the character limit.

However, the length of a tweet is still limited to 140 characters.

The length of tweets was originally designed to include a user's name and still fit within the 160-character SMS messaging format² used for mobile phones.

Additional changes include the ability to retweet and quote-tweet a person's own posts.

Twitter said that updates would be implemented³ "over the coming months".
