Chinanews, Shanghai, March 1 – Simao, Yunnan Province, famous for the Pu'er Tea (known as the “drinkable antiques”), will change its name to Pu'er as of April 8, 2007.
There are two reasons for Simao to do so. The first, its original name was Pu'er in the past, which came from the mountain where the tea was produced. After the founding of New China, its name was first changed into Pu'er District, then Sipu District and currently Simao. It was established as Simao City on October 30, 2003. Thus it is only to restore the history of Simao to change its name back. The second is to propagate Pu'er Tea, as it represents the backbone1 product of Simao. The popularity of Pu'er Tea in the world has very much to do with the living conditions of Simao residents. In fact, about 50% of those living in Simao are doing Pu'er-Tea-related businesses.
