Chinanews, Fuzhou, October 12 – 17 underwater cultural relics1 robbers were arrested for stealing cultural relics in shipwrecks2 along the Pingtan coast, Fujian Province.
There are many shipwrecks with a wealth of precious cultural relics dating back to the Yuan and the Ming dynasties buried along the Pingtan coast, making it hot for robbers and smugglers. Local police have long been working hard to save these treasures from loss, and their effort is not in vain. Last August, 3 robbers were caught on the spot in Songxia near Pingtan, with 641 pieces of cultural relics captured, and another pack of 14 was arrested on the sea with 10 pieces of ancient chinaware found on their motorboat last September. On October 9, 22 pieces of chinaware of the Ming Dynasty, made in the Longquan Kiln3, were found in Songxia, which might having been hidden by robbers, adding to the good news.
