Chinanews, Suzhou, Dec. 1 – Suzhou Tourism Bureau plans to organize a bell chime activity at Hanshan Temple to welcome the arrival of the New Year in 2008. The plan of the activity was settled recently.

The Temple of Cold Hill has been in Suzhou for more than 1,400 years now. It became a famous temple in China after the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji wrote a poem about it. In this poem, Zhang wrote: "Beyond the Suzhou walls the Temple of Cold Hill rang the bell,/ Which reached my boat breaking the midnight still." In Suzhou, the activity of listening to the bell chime at the Temple of Cold Hill to welcome in the New Year has been held in the city for 28 years. Every year in the past, thousands of Chinese from home and abroad came on New Year's Eve to listen to the chiming of the bell, which is said to have been practiced in the city for more than 1,000 years.

On next year's New Year's Eve, local tourism department will display a newly built bell and the bell inscription1 to visitors. The bell inscription will be the largest stone-carved one ever made in China and the bell will be the largest bell in China ever made for a Buddhist2 temple. The bell will be made by a company in Wuhan in a shape typically seen in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The bottom of the bell will measure 5.188 meters in diameter. Its surface will be inscribed3 with scripts taken from a 70,000-word Buddhist classic. Its bottom will be decorated with pictures copied from the Flying Maiden4 Fairies series. The copper5 bell will weigh 108 tons and on New Year's Eve, visitors can hear the bell being struck 108 times at midnights.

So far, all tickets for the activity have already been sold out, the reservation having ended 20 days earlier than previous years. Another difference is that in previous years, most overseas visitors came to Suzhou from Japan and South Korea. This year, however, a lot more visitors will come from European countries and the United States. Many French visitors will join the group tours to attend the activity and people from other parts of Europe and the United States will reserve a ticket as individual visitors. Now, many large tourist agencies in Shanghai have begun to organize some overseas group tours for the event, said Yan Linxing, director of the Festive6 Events Organization Department at Suzhou Tourism Bureau.
