Chinanews, Nanchang, Dec. 10 – Archeologists recently found an ancient tomb at a construction site in Qingyunpu District, Nanchang, Jiangxi Province. The tomb is said to be the best-preserved one ever found in Jiangxi. Archeologists presume that it was built in the Six Dynasties Period (220-581), also called the Liuchao Period. The discovery of several Chinese characters inside the tomb might confirm the existence of the ancient Haihun City.

The tomb is kept in a good condition with no trace of being raided before. It is a fairly large structure, covering an area of 40 square meters. The tomb bears a special construction structure. It is built into an arch shape with stone bricks all carved with fine patterns. Archeologists presume that the tomb was built between the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) and the beginning of the Jin Dynasty (265-317), also called the Liuchao Period by some historians. So it has a history of 1,200 years, said Li Guoli, curator of the Nanchang Municipal Museum.

Archeologists found some characters inscribed1 on three bricks at the rear entrance of the tomb saying “Haihun County, Yuzhang State”, and “Built for Mr. Xu, aged2 53”. Archeologists felt thrilled about the discovery. Earlier, they had also excavated3 some relics4 in Nanchang that bore characters like “Made in Haihun County, Yuzhang State”. The discoveries of the characters might help historians to confirm the existence of the Haihun City, which is said to have disappeared about one thousand years ago.

In the Han Dynasty, Haihun was one of the 18 cities that were under the governance of Yuzhang State. It first appeared in 201 BC, or the sixth reigning5 year of the Han Dynasty's founder6 Emperor Gaozu. The city was located in Lutan Village and opposite to Wucheng County. At that time, Haihun City was situated7 in Poyang Basin and was a place with a large population. However, as the water in Poyang Lake kept rising, the city was finally submerged under the lake in 425 AD in the Southern Dynasties Period. After it disappeared, many local residents then moved to settle in Wucheng, which sat in a place with a relatively8 higher altitude. There has always been a popular saying that goes the rounds of the local people, "Haihun subsided9 only to let Wucheng surface."
