Chinanews, Nanjing, Dec. 13 – At a time when China commemorates2 the 70th anniversary of Nanjing Massacre3, some Japanese still question the statement that “300,000 people were killed in Nanjing Massacre.” On Tuesday, a Japanese reporter, who went to Nanjing to cover the incident, raised the question to Nanjing authorities. In responding to his question, the curator of Nanjing Massacre Memorial Zhu Chengshan stressed that “300,000 people did lose their lives in Nanjing Massacre. There should be no doubt about this death toll4 figure.”

The death toll was not proposed by any Chinese or Japanese scholars, nor was it fabricated by anybody. Rather, it was acknowledged by both the Far East Court and Nanjing Court that judged the case at that time. Could anyone reverse the courts' ruling?! Zhu asked.

If the court ruling should not be reversed, then the death toll figure should not be questioned, either. The 300,000 death toll was not proposed by any Chinese scholars or any politicians out of ulterior political motives5. Therefore we should not doubt the death toll figure, Zhu said.

In responding to the issue that scholars have held many discussions about the Nanjing Massacre death toll and some Japanese scholars are always questioning the death toll figure, Zhu said the figure could be brought up for debate. However, whatever the figure was, the Japanese side should respect historical truth.

Since the Japanese right wing force denied Nanjing Massacre, in the 1980s the Nanjing municipal government started to build a memorial hall to commemorate1 the event. Meanwhile, it organized some scholars and social activists6 to conduct social investigations8 and gather information related with the tragic9 incident. The efforts led to the publication of a number of books that revealed the historical findings and scholars’ investigation7 results about Nanjing Massacre. With careful studies and in-depth investigations, Chinese government, public and scholars all agree on the fact, which is that 300,000 people lost their lives in Nanjing Massacre.
