Chinanews, Wuhan, December 29 – According to a survey conducted in the Wuhan University, most students complain about their instructors1 spending too much more time on their research projects than on teaching or communication with students. This impetuous-for-success style of work on the part of the teachers has become a top concern of the students.
On the evening of December 25, Liu Jingnan, the president of Wuhan University, gave an interview to his students, during which the latter asked him a lot of sharp questions. “The accreditation2 system in the 1980s is still applied3 in many Chinese colleges, which requires each faculty4 member to publish a research paper every year and a book every three years, thus many of them have had to spend much more of their time on writing research papers, than on teaching. Some instructors even ask their students to give lectures on their behalf. Can this help to develop higher education?” asked one student. “It is true that most young teachers are under heavy pressures of academic researches, and they might find it hard to invest much time on teaching. I wish that you could understand them,” answered Liu.
