Official reports estimate that up to 50 million young people are living alone in big cities in China.
官方报告估计,中国的大城市有多达5000万年轻人独自居住。
Observers have created the term Kongchaoqingnian, or literally1 young empty-nesters, to describe them.
It mainly refers to people between the ages of 20 to 39 who work far from home and away from their parents or partners.
Some of these people have good social lives but still feel empty inside.
Chinese website NetEase surveyed 5,000 such young people and compared the results with big data. The findings suggest as many as 68 percent of the surveyed say they have felt lonely in the past week, while only 14 percent say they never feel empty.
Current surveys also found that young men have a bigger inclination2 to become Kongchaoqingnian than their female counterparts.
Respondents said not owning a house, being single, and being disoriented about the future were their top 3 concerns.
