The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) announced on Tuesday that the country will implement¹ real-name registrations³ for civilian⁴ drones.

Starting in June, drones weighing more than 250 grams will have to be registered with the authorities.

 

The CAAC's new registration² system is set to become operational on May 18, 2017.

 

Privately-owned drones have become increasingly popular in China. However, several airports have experienced flight disruptions due to drone owners flying their remote aircraft in restricted areas around airports.

 

On May 12, over 200 flights were disrupted due to a drone flying around an airport in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. At least 40 flights were forced to land at alternative airports, while more than 60 other flights were canceled and another 140 were delayed, affecting over 10,000 passengers. 

 

In late April, four drones were illegally flown over Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport in southwest China's Sichuan Province, forcing 58 flights to land at alternative airports, four flights to return to their departure airport and more than 10 to be canceled.
