Authorities in the eastern Chinese provinces of Shandong and Jiangsu have begun installing red-light cameras in a number of cities, reports CCTV.
中央电视台报道,山东省和江苏省地方政府已开始在一些城市安装红灯摄像头。
The technology captures the image of the pedestrians1, the drivers of non-motor vehicles if they blow a red light.
Within 10 seconds, the information is then put up on display screens.
The ultimate goal is to try to shame jaywalkers in Shandong and Jiangsu into adhering to traffic regulations, which remains2 a major problem in cities throughout China.
On top of the public shaming, traffic police in the city of Suqian in Jiangsu Province have begun handing out immediate3 fines ranging from 20 to 50 yuan for both drivers and pedestrians who ignore red lights.
"Since people who run red lights can see the replay and their photos on the big screens, most of them will call the traffic control department to accept the punishment, ask us to remove their photos, and promise to never break the rules again. For those who refuse to contact us, we will eventually track them down after verifying their information," said Xia Jianshe, deputy leader of the Suqian Traffic Police Detachment.
