Linked to Alipay, the e-social security card allows direct access to services including record inquiries3 and medical payments.
Recipients4 of the new cards will be given a unique QR code which they can scan for services.
China's social security system has around 1.12 billion card holders5, which is over 80 percent of the population.
Ministry officials promise the new cards are secure, noting they require passwords, fingerprints6 and facial recognition.
The new e-cards are being put out on a trial basis in various cities across China. The new e-social security cards follow the release last week of new electronic personal ID cards.
