The Ministry¹ of Human Resources and Social Security has issued China's first nationally-unified digital social security card at the ongoing² Digital China Summit in Fuzhou, Fujian Province.

Linked to Alipay, the e-social security card allows direct access to services including record inquiries³ and medical payments.

 

Recipients⁴ of the new cards will be given a unique QR code which they can scan for services.

 

China's social security system has around 1.12 billion card holders⁵, which is over 80 percent of the population.

 

Ministry officials promise the new cards are secure, noting they require passwords, fingerprints⁶ and facial recognition.

 

The new e-cards are being put out on a trial basis in various cities across China. The new e-social security cards follow the release last week of new electronic personal ID cards.
