The only two giant pandas in Australia, Funi and Wang Wang, are likely to return to China this year after a fifth failed attempt at artificial insemination, reported the Daily Mail.

The two pandas were moved to Adelaide Zoo on December 13, 2009 and became main attractions at the zoo.

 

However, the two never mated successfully and artificial insemination started in 2013.

 

It's been reported that the last two attempts at artificial insemination on Funi were conducted in September of last year. The low level of progesterone in Funi was once thought to be evidence of pregnancy¹ but it turned out to be a false reading.

 

Despite this, CEO of the Adelaide Zoo Jaimee Foote said that the facilities specially² built for the pandas and 9 years of experience in raising them will give them a chance of successfully breeding pandas in the future.

 

When and how the pandas will be returned are up to the federal government of Australia, which has been funding the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, Jaimee Foote added.
