Chinanews, Shanghai, Apr. 19 – A dozen of nurses from the United States recently came to the Shanghai Institute of Health Sciences to conduct international academic exchanges with their Chinese counterparts.
They are all college students studying nursing major in medical schools. Although they have obtained nursing certificates issued by the US government, by US law they will have to choose another country outside the United States to work as an apprentice1. So, many US college students choose to come to Shanghai to conduct international academic exchanges. The Shanghai Institute of Health Sciences is not the only place that US students go. Recently, the International Exchange Department at the School of Nursing under the Shanghai Jiaotong University has also received a group of 16 young nurses. These students, who came from the United States, Norway and Finland, arrived in China for a 6-week academic exchange. They will learn some practical experiences in the clinic rooms in surgical2, hematological and Cardiovascular departments, and coronary care units. One nurse, Milly (sound translation), was a medical student in the United States. She took care of the Chinese patients whole-heartedly, and let her Chinese counterparts get to know the different nursing concept in the US. “In medical operation procedures, there is basically no difference between China and the United States. The only difference is that we might have a different attitude toward our patients. In China, nurses do what patients want them to do. In the United States, however, our concept is what we can do for our patients,” she told this reporter. “In the United States, most nurses will work in communities, or do some work related with public servicing, disease prevention or psychotherapy. In China, we can actually learn more practical skills in clinics,” she added. When asked why she chose to come to China, Milly said she was fascinated by Chinese history and culture.
