Chinanews, Chengdu, May 10 – Many women beggars on the streets of Chengdu are found by this reporter to be dressed very fashionably when night falls.
Ms Wu, a 17- year-old girl, told our reporter that she came from a very poor family in the rural areas of Guizhou Province. Running out of money one month after she arrived in Chengdu, she began begging for money on the streets. “It is actually quite by chance that I began doing this,” says Ms Wu. She told this reporter that she had found many beggars were girls of her age and were very well dressed. “They sometimes get money simply with a piece of chalk. Can’t I make money in the same way?” she asked herself. So she made up her mind to be a beggar, by fabricating1 her reasons for begging, designing special clothes, and learning how to cheat sympathetic passers-by on the streets. In the very beginning, she was ashamed for her behavior, not daring ask passers-by for anything. By and by, however, she began to accept this “job” as a way of making her living. Her daily income can sometimes reach several hundred yuan, but sometimes only several yuan. Besides 3 to 5 hours of “working” everyday, such women beggars as Ms Wu idle around all day, doing nothing but surfing the Internet, drinking in bars, or going shopping. “The purpose of making money is just to better enjoy myself,” said a woman beggar. The life of begging is never easy and pleasant. These girls seldom make a phone call to their parents, worrying what they have been doing will be discovered. They are frequently reviled2 and beaten by passers-by. As a matter of fact, many women beggars interviewed regret and feel ashamed for their behavior, for they know they are cheating kind people and taking the advantage of them.
