Chinanews, Beijing, July 4 – From August 7 to August 20 this year, a traffic control exercise will be held in Beijing, during which only two million vehicles will be allowed to travel on street every day. The exercise will serve as an important part of the preparatory work for the 2008 Olympic Games.
The information was released on July 2, at the ICO’s 119th session in Guatemala. Beijing municipal1 government has approved the exercise plan by Beijing Organizing Committee for Olympic Games (BOCOG). However, the specific plan is not yet published. Some people guess it might be similar to the traffic control measure used last year during the Sino-Africa Forum2, when 80% of vehicles of government departments were not allowed to travel on the street and ordinary citizens were also encouraged to use public transportation as much as possible. It is estimate that there will be 3.3 million vehicles in Beijing when the Olympic Games is held in Beijing in 2008. The plan is to cut the number of vehicles on the roads and streets in Beijing by at least 1 million during the Games, when traffic will cease to be headache for both Beijiners and visitors.
