Chinanews, Guangzhou, July 12 – Guangzhou conducted an opinion poll on medical services in the city, finding that though most respondents feel satisfied with the medical services, 45.2% of them complain about doctors accepting hongbao (red envelop1 or paper bag containing money given privately2 as a gift).
About 73.1% of citizens and 83.5% of patients are satisfied with the professional ethics3 of doctors. 29.8% of citizens and 33.0% of patients say that they are very pleased with it, though many of them wish to receive warmer service from doctors and nurses. However, 37.5% of citizens and 45.2% of patients say that their doctors asked them for hongbao. Sometimes, doctors prescribe very expensive drugs for patients, make them take unnecessary checks, or persuade them to use imported drugs.
