Chinanews, Beijing, July 30 - The Beijing Municipal Administration Commission is always considered as an important working unit in Beijing's city construction. China's "garbage king", Wang Weiping, works there. Praised as an expert on garbage treatment, Wang has made many useful proposals on how to treat the garbage in Beijing. He is therefore dubbed1 "the first person in China that advocates a green GDP growth."

In May, this year, Wang went to the United States for a visit. When he was introduced to Hillary Clinton, the wife of former US president Bill Clinton, by the head of the US House of Representatives in Maryland, the former first lady praised Wang's work simply by saying that people could live without planes but human beings couldn't avoid garbage treatment. Wang was greatly impressed by her words.

Wang has always been considered as a pioneer in the field of environmental protection. Way back in the early 1990s, he proposed that the best solution to garbage treatment was to produce as little garbage as possible. In Wang's view, traditional garbage treatment methods, like burning, burying or composting, are very silly measures for garbage treatment. Compared with investing a lot of money to dispose of garbage afterwards, it might be a lot better not to produce this garbage in the first place or to turn some of the garbage into useful resources, said Wang.

Wang stuck to these views for more than a decade. In April 2005, his views were finally adopted as the key contents in the Regulations on Solid Waste Treatment in China. With the adoption2, traditional garbage treatment methods were therefore discarded.

Later, Wang wrote an article proposing that China change the current GDP calculating method by introducing such ideas as recycling economy and green GDP as the basis for the country's GDP calculation. He presented his article to related authorities. As he greatly supports the development of recycling GDP, he is dubbed as the No.1 person in China to promote a green GDP.

In promoting the recycling economy, Wang suggests five important channels. Among them, he says, the most important thing is to cultivate a market for the reused materials and reproduced goods.

"Chinese government attaches great importance to my suggestions. The suggestions might be included in China's legal system in the next two years," Wang told this reporter.
