New York was on Wednesday named as the world's top fashion city for the fourth consecutive1 year, according to a survey by a U.S.-based language use group.
The Global Language Monitor, a non-profit group that tracks words and phrases in the media, on the Internet and throughout the blogosphere, compiles2 an annual list of the top fashion cities.
New York ousted3 Paris as the leader in the list four years ago, leaving the French capital jostling with London, Rome, and Milan for the other top positions in the list.
This year, Rome beat out the others for second place with Paris coming in third position, followed by Milan and London. Hong Kong was rated the top fashion city in South Asia, coming in 8th position overall.
Other notable4 rankings included Shanghai at number 14, Sydney and Melbourne at numbers 12 and 15 respectively, and the fashion quartet of South America -- Santiago, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Buenos Aires.
Krakow, one of the largest and oldest cities in Poland, made it to No. 25, apparently5 because of its emerging6 status as a centre of neo-Bohemian influence.
"The ranking is surprising in a number of ways, most of which relate to the changing nature of the global fashion industry," Millie Payack, a director of the Global Language Monitor, said in a statement.
"Cities that recently would have been considered fashion backwaters are now emerging as significant regional hubs."

四年前，纽约取代巴黎成为全球第一大时尚城市，令法国首都不得不与伦敦、罗马和米兰一决高下。
今年，罗马击败其它几个城市跃居第二，巴黎名列第三，米兰和伦敦位居其后。香港成为南亚地区第一大时尚城市，总排名第八位。
其余几大入选城市包括：上海，第14位；悉尼和墨尔本，分别位居第12和第15位；以及南美“四强”--圣地亚哥、里约热内卢、圣保罗和布宜诺斯艾利斯。
波兰最大、最古老的城市之一克兰科夫名列第25位，其上榜原因很明显，主要是因为它日益确立起“新波希米亚时尚中心”的地位。
全球语言监控机构的总裁米里·培雅克在一份声明中说：“这一排行在很多方面让人意外，大部分因素与全球时尚业不断变化的本质有关。”
