Chinanews, Shanghai, Aug 1 – An unexpected1 visitor climbed the skyscraper2 Jinmao Tower on Tuesday. The “spider man” arrived at the bottom of the tower in the evening and by 21:50, it seemed that he had reached the top.

The “spider man” started to climb the tower at half past six on Tuesday evening. Hearing the news, policemen and fire fighters hotfooted it to the scene. They even placed an air cushion on the floor in case the man might fall off.

Located in Lujiazui, Pudong District, Jinmao Tower, with a height of 420 meters, is the highest building in Shanghai.

The tower attracted many adventurers to come to climb the building. In January 2001, a 30-year-old man, who ran a shoe shop in Anhui, came to Shanghai to scale the building with bare hands. He was then arrested by the police and detained3 in a police station for 15 days. The punishment made Alain Robert, the French skyscraper climber, cancel his plan of climbing the building.

Later, in April 2005, a 20-year-old man from Guizhou climbed to the 86th storey of Jinmao Tower. He was later detained by the police for 15 days, too.

In May 2007, Alain Robert, the French “spider man”, who once ascended4 70 tallest buildings in the world, started to climb Jinmao Tower. After reaching the top, he even managed to climb down. Of course, he was also arrested by the police afterwards.
