Chinanews, Beijing, Aug.1- The Public Nutrition Center at the Macroeconomic Research Institute under the State Development and Reform Commission last week publicized the result of a survey conducted by sina.com website for the purpose of getting an overall picture of Chinese people's nutrition knowledge.

Information released by the World Bank shows that in developing countries, economic losses that result from malnutrition1 account for 3%-5% of the country's GDP. Based on this information, it can be estimated that in 2006, malnutrition problem caused at least 630 billion yuan of economic loss in China (calculated on the basis of China's 2006 GDP of about 21 trillion yuan), according to Xu Xiaodi, a member of the survey team.

In order to conduct the survey, 3,896 questionnaires were issued, and 2,568 questionnaires were returned. 34% of these questionnaires are not answered completely. The questionnaires contain 12 common questions dealing2 with the most basic knowledge about nutrition. From the answer sheets, it can be seen that Chinese public's knowledge about nutrition is very superficial.

In the whole world, about 200,000 children are born with one physical defect or another every year because of malnutrition problem. Half of them are born in China. In China, most malnutrition problem is caused by the lack of folic acid. However, when such question is posed to the public, most Chinese people think that problem is caused by “the lack of calcium”. This shows that Chinese public have obtained very little knowledge about nutrition.

The Public Nutrition Center stresses that the ultimate goal of development is not the accumulation of wealth nor the improvement of economic structure. Rather, the ultimate goal of development lies in the overall development of human beings themselves. Malnutrition is also called “a hidden killer”, as it often damages the survival capability3 of children, women, families, and even the whole society, impedes4 social development, destroys people's dreams, and causes great losses to society.
