Chinanews, Beijing, August 3 – Currently China is witnessing a fast urbanization process. According to the Ministry1 of Construction, urban population in China will break 800 million in 2015.
China’s urban population in 2006 was 577 million, about 43.92% of its total population. “In the next 20 – 30 years, some 15 million to 18 million people will migrate from rural areas to cities every year, for there is currently a surplus labor2 force of 150 million in the countryside,” Qiu Baoxing, Vice3 Minister of Construction. In the next few years, more and more people will live in big cities, where there are more job vacancies4 available. In 2006 alone, 62.4% of 132 million migrant workers worked in big cities. Nowadays, there are 32 super-big cities, 43 big cities, 192 medium cities and 400-plus small cities in China, not including 20,000-some towns. “China must improve its urban transportation in the next ten years. By 2015, there might be 90 million cars and urban population will reach a new high. By then, both problems will raise a great challenge to transportation,” said Qiu.
