Chinanews, Beijing, August 29 – An expert team of the Ministry1 of Health has finished updating the regulations on health management in public places and handed it to the State Council for official approval. According to the new regulation, all the public places and public transportation in China will become smoke-free in the next three years.
Since China has 350 million smokers2, International Tribune Leader and Sina.com have jointly3 conducted a survey on their reaction towards the new regulations, finding that 88.74% of the 4,000-some respondents strongly support them, for the regulations will help to build a better urban environment, especially for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
However, 10.22% of the respondents don’t agree that all the public places should be smoke-free. “I believe it is my right to smoke as long as I don’t cause trouble to others,” said Mr. Wei from Hebei Province.
44.57% of the respondents say they will stop others smoking in public places in the future, while 41.1% of them say they won’tt.
The new regulations might bring troubles to restaurants, as they will have to divide their rooms into smoking and no-smoking parts. Besides, not all customers will obey the regulations, particularly after drinking liquor.
