Chinanews, Xi’an, Sep 1 – A construction project to restore the glorious city feature of Xi’an during the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) was recently kicked off in the city, said He Hongxing, director of Xi’an Municipal City Planning Bureau.
For once, Xi’an was the capital of the Tang Dynasty, which was considered as one of the most prosperous periods in ancient China. In the Tang Dynasty, the city’s downtown area was located in a place that was now the western part of the southern district of Xi’an and the imperial palace was built in a place that belongs to the northwestern part of the city. The two sites cover a total area of 9.41 square kilometers. During the restoration project, most of the public institutions will be moved out and residents living in the old downtown area will be relocated. By doing so, the average height of the buildings in the downtown area will become smaller and the density1 of the buildings will also be reduced. The ecological2 conditions in the downtown area will be improved. At present, the Grand Hibiscus Garden, which was built on the relic3 site of the Royal hibiscus garden in the Tang Dynasty, has already been opened to the public. It is a theme park that displays the grandeur4 of the Tang Empire. The three main parts of the garden, the Beauty Hall, the Royal Banquet Hall and Fanglin Garden are scattered5 on a 300-mu (200, 000 square meters) lake. The buildings in the garden display all the architectural styles adopted in the Tang Dynasty and it is said to be the largest Tang-style building complex ever built in China. While appreciating the different architectual styles, visitors also have a chance to enjoy a Tang-style dancing. In addition to the Grand Hibiscus Garden, another large construction project, Da Tang Xi Shi, will also be built in the old downtown area. The project will cover a total area of one million square meters and all the buildings will also take the Tang architectural style. The project tries to display Xi’an as a very prosperous city in the Tang Dynasty when thousands of people from home and abroad came to Xi’an for a visit or for doing business.
