Chinanews, Beijing, Sept.5 – In China, the number of the rich increases at an annual rate of 15% year by year. There are now 1.5 million rich people in China, the China Economic Times reported.

Global consulting firm McKinsey recently issued a report which says that in China, the rising rich population is no different from their counterparts in other prosperous countries in Asia in regard to their attitudes towards investment making and credit use. The rich people of China (people who make at least 50,000 US dollars a year) are willing to make investment and sustain the potential risks involved in investment making. In addition, they would like to borrow credit from banks when necessary.

In 2007, McKinsey's personal financial service department carried out face-to-face talks among 13,000 people in 12 regions in Asia. In China, it investigated 4,178 people from 16 cities in 15 provinces and had different financial backgrounds.

The survey shows that in China, the number of financial products owned by rich people is no different from people in other prosperous countries in Asia. On average, every Chinese rich person has 6.3 financial products varying from credit card to mutual1 funds. The ratio is relatively2 the same as that in Hong Kong (where every rich person has 8.3 financial products on average), but higher than that in Singapore (where the related ratio stands at 5.6) and Taiwan (5.4).

Although many rich Chinese are still reluctant to borrow credit from banks (51% of respondents regard overdraft3 as ‘dangerous’), still, more and more rich people are willing to borrow credit from banks. In China, 31% of the rich people think that borrowing credit from banks can raise their life quality, while in Hong Kong, only 17% of the rich people think so.

In addition, compared with people in other countries in Asia, rich Chinese are also more willing to make investment and sustain the risks involved in it. In China, 41% of the rich people are willing to make investments which involve moderate or relatively high risks in order to make greater gains, while in Hong Kong, only 37% are willing to do so. In Singapore, the proportion is only 24%.

The survey also shows that Chinese consumers hold a more liberal view towards foreign banks. Although there are a large proportion of Chinese who still prefer to choose domestic financial institutions, 41% of the people covered by the survey think that they will benefit from foreign banks' entry into China. The proportion is higher than that in 2004 (34%) and the number of people who hold this view grows by the largest range in nine years.
