Chinanews, Beijing, September 5 – Our reporter learned at the press briefing on Olympic cultural heritage protection that Beijing will discontinue renovating1 ancient buildings during the 2008 Olympic Games. Meanwhile, a limitation will be imposed on the number of visitors to major protected ancient buildings at that time.
The new regulations on protecting cultural heritages and the new service standard for cultural heritages as tourist spots were released at the meeting, requiring bilingual signposts (English and Chinese) to be put up there and English-speaking guides to be employed. The signposts with faulty English translations will be replaced. Besides, security of cultural heritages in Beijing will be enhanced. During the 2008 Olympic Games, visitors will be able to visit ancient buildings that are not yet open to the general public as long as their basic refurbishment is completed. Beijing will also arrange special occasions for foreign journalists to visit ancient buildings after their application is approved by the Beijing Municipal Cultural Heritage Administration. The application form will be available at the official site of the administration soon.
